7 Ways to Avoid Bipolar Episodes
If you have bipolar disorder, then you know how horrible it is to go into a bipolar episode. However, there are several ways to avoid going into these episodes. In this article, I will show you seven ways to avoid them.
1. Take your medication
Although there is still no cure for bipolar disorder at this time, the best way to fight it is through medication. By taking medication, you can stay stable, manage your mood swings, and avoid bipolar episodes. Should you find yourself becoming unstable, just check with your doctor, and he/she can adjust your medications until you feel more like yourself again. The important thing is that you take your bipolar medications every day.
2. Go to all your appointments
The other part of treatment for bipolar disorder is seeing your doctor, psychiatrist, and therapist on a regular basis. If you miss an appointment, try to reschedule as soon as possible. Missing appointments can affect your stability in a negative way and affect your stability, possibly causing you to go into an episode. It is your doctor, psychiatrist, and therapist who keep you on track.
3. Have a good, strong support system
You must have a good, strong system including people to whom you are accountable. These people could include your primary supporter, your friends and family, medical and mental health professionals (including your pharmacist), clergy person, etc. They will help notice when signs and symptoms of your bipolar disorder begin showing and thus help you to avoid bipolar episodes.
4. Take care of yourself
Getting the right amount of uninterrupted sleep (8-9 hours per night), exercising, and eating a healthy diet are important to maintaining your stability and keeping you from having episodes. You must take care of yourself not just physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually as well.
5. Avoid stress
Stress is one of the worst triggers to a bipolar episode. Try keeping your life as stress-free as possible. Use relaxation exercises, meditation, stress reduction exercises, avoid stressful situations, and anything else that will lower your stress levels. Keep balance in your life between your professional, family, and personal responsibilities, and don't let yourself become overwhelmed by them.
6. Be productive
Sticking to a routine will help you to feel productive. Get up at the same time every morning and go to sleep at the same time every night. Take your medications at the same time every day. Some people keep a To-Do list each day, so that when they complete the items on the list, they feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. Volunteer for a worthy cause if you are not working outside the home. Being idle can lead to a bipolar episode.
7. Be happy
Having a positive outlook is very important in avoiding bipolar episodes. Remember to take time for yourself to enjoy your life, despite the fact that you have bipolar disorder. Leisure activities, recreation time, doing things you enjoy, hobbies, having a social life, and spending time with your friends and family are all ways to avoid episodes.
